How many backlinks a day won't get me in trouble?

By Gloria Mwesigye

Oh! So you've heard about backlinks and feel like they could be a good thing to incorporate in your articles or writings. What is too many? What is too few? What is a backlink anyway?

Seen those words highlighted in an article that lead you to another website when you click on them? Those are backlinks. You are probably looking to add them to your blog, email, and, landing page, name it- and yes, it can be an over dose.

For a reader and writer like me, you can add quite a number and I will open a number of tabs in my window to follow up after the current article, but will I successfully read them? Naaa...

You are denying me information because you want me to click through all these links. You want to create realistically required backlinks leading to content relevant to the article your writing. Don’t get me wrong, I love a continuing story but because I have OCD too many backlinks will likely make me open none or skip to the next article.

There are cases you cannot avoid backlinking a site especially in situations where you are crediting the creator. This should never be overlooked because it can land you a ban as a result of plagiary.

Let us look at the distribution based on content and platform.

Social media posts.

Main stream social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn with all the tagging and links to out profile names calls for one back link. Believe me not, no one is going to tap on more than one link! no one!

This is a Facebook post I shared about a reunion to be held by obs and ogs from my primary school. See what I did there? One link.

Email marketing

Depending on the content, the email body can have up to three backlinks if they are leading you different sites and many if they are leading you to the same site. An email could be about an online shop selling its products like Amazon, a launch of a coaching program, update of a blog, or an online school describing their programmes.

Take a look at an email I received from Alison Courses. See what I just did there is backlinking the words Alison courses. Notice the links to their website, and signup landing page, all these lead you to their online school, and various social media pages. The links are minimised to two key areas.

This I received from Angie Gensler. Her email body has links to her creator app, the social media content club, podcast, and news updates where a reader could pick on one article to follow through with. She minimises her backlinks to three key areas.

Blogs

My ultimate favourite because of the humour personalities they depict. A blog could be anything. In fact almost all the information you read on the internet are blogs written by someone. Take an example of this article your reading.

These can have up to three backlinks to help you achieve your goals. Let us take a look at one of my favourite bloggers articles, Vanessa Lau, you will love her. You will notice her body has three backlinks, a relatable blog, a news letter signup and a sign up to her course. Check it out.

Landing pages and websites

As much as websites can go up to as many backlinks as you can incorporate a landing page needs relatively few and can be up to one if it is a sales page. The design is intended to take a visitor through a desired journey.

Websites hold all the information so, no limits. All that is required of you is to make it easy for navigation.

Landing pages are however created with a purpose they should be able to have links strictly fulfilling that purpose say a webinar sign up.

Lets take a look at the Vanessa Lau’s BossGram Academy landing page used for lead generation.

All backlinks in her body lead to a registration for her program.

YouTube

The top video search engine the world has today harboring all kinds of information. I bet you this article that you will find content on backlinks there.

This platform avails you with space for a description that appears below your page and what you do with it is up to you. The links can be up to the word limit if it has one.

Many creators add links to their other videos, merch, affiliate products, sponsors, offers, socials, and this is where you can add your backlinks. The simple advice I can give you is give a simple description to links or a heading to categorise them. Not only teachers love neat work.

Once again, let us look at Vanessa Lau’s YouTube video’s description content.

See that! Neat work! All her links have a simple description added to it which makes it easy to interact with and her content can easily be binge watched.

Now, all these platforms can have other links which may not lead you to a site. They could link you to an email, disclaimers, and anything else that is not a site and these are usually added in the footer and header just like it is on this page.
